Description

Large Original W/C by Thomas Andrew Nicholas NA                             Cornwall Cliffs

Offered here is a large watercolor by National Academician Tom Nicholas, painted in Cornwall Cliffs.  It's a rich, strong work, painted on heavy D'Arches    It is expensively "French" matted and complements the work beautifully.  The overall size is  31 by 25.5".  It is protected under acrylic.  The painting, mat, and frame are in excellent condition.

The scene is a wall enclosed ranch with a chapel and figures in the foreground and dwellings set among the trees in the rear   Please excuse the reflections in the smaller detail images, taken under acrylic*.

The piece is signed lower left.  In correspondence, the Nicholas Gallery informed me of the date painted, the location, and original title.  You can't get better provenance.

When elected to the National Academy in1970,  Nicholas was one of the youngest artists to be so honored.  His honors and awards have continued.  His watercolors of this size can sell for $5,000 to $10,000 and oils much higher.  You'll find gallery examples on the internet.  We are stating well below gallery prices.  Returns are accepted only in case of misrepresentation, but our guarantee of authenticity is without time limit.

National Academy of Design

Probably many of  you viewers know that election to full Academician by one's artist peers is the highest recognition an artist may achieve in the USA.  You may not know just how rare that recognition is. Since Samuel F.B. Morse and associates founded the National Academy of Design in 1825, only about 750 artists have been elected full academician.  I made that count two years ago from Academy records excluding honorary and associate members.  Bear in mind that this group includes architects, sculptors, and etchers, as well as painters, so the number of Academician painters is much lower than 750.

Thomas Andrew Nicholas 1934 -

Painting professionally for more than half a century, Tom Nicholas has attained a position as one of the country’s foremost landscape painters.  After formal studies as a scholarship student at the School for Visual Arts, NYC, from 1953-56, he was awarded a Greenshield Grant for two years of independent painting abroad and in the USA. Since then, he has painted on location in many of the world’s most magnificent settings.

Nicholas is an Academician of the National Academy of Design and a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society.  One of the youngest members ever elected to the National Academy (in 1970), he has been honored with nearly 300 awards and medals and has created 40 one-man shows throughout the country.  Since 1960, he has painted throughout Europe and the United States.
